Philip Togni produces some of the richest, most extracted wine in Napa Valley. Your are bidding on a an ODD YEAR VERTICAL of this opulent wine. Odd year growing seasons DOMINATED in these given vintages. 1997 Philip Togni Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 98 points boatloads of tannin to resolve, and just a faint lightening of the dense purple color at the rim, this is a brilliant wine from a vintage that produced relatively quick-evolving wines, but no such thing is tolerated at Philip Togni. This is a great Cabernet Sauvignon with the exuberance, purity, and richness of fruit that Napa provides, but with a Bordeaux structure that Togni, with his Bordeaux upbringing, somehow builds into the wine. This wine will continue to drink well for at least another 30+ years. " (12/07) 92 points Stephen Tanzer: Saturated ruby-red. Wild, gamey aromas of black cherry, black olive, tobacco and iron. Lush, thick and sweet, with a lovely pliant texture. Cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by slightly sauvage notes of roasted meat, tobacco and minerals. Very long but still a bit disjointed on the finish. I'd give this cabernet a few more years in the bottle before pulling the cork." (May/June '00) 1999 Philip Togni Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 92 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good full ruby. Sexy aromas of plum, truffle, mocha and musky coffee, plus a suggestion of old wood. Still quite dense, even young, with complex flavors of minerals, spices and underbrush. Boasts lovely silky sweetness but at the same time comes across as aromatic and nicely delineated, finishing with suave tannins and lovely persistence. I suspect Togni's barrels are better today but this ten-year-old library release possesses a firm spine and is in fine shape." May/Jun 09) 91 points Robert Parker: "There are 1,500 cases of the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon. Its dense purple color is followed by a big, spicy nose of black currant liqueur, licorice, and foresty/fern-like scents. It is sweet, medium to full-bodied, and deep, as well as structured, and a Bordeaux-like tannic profile in the finish. It will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2026+." (08/02) 90 points Wine Spectator: "A wine with a potent personality. Dark and intense, with a massive core of tannins lining the racy, herbaceous bell pepper, currant, earth, mineral and tar flavors. Has a good dose of cedary oak. Finishes with firm tannins and the need to rest, chained in a dark, cool space for a few years. Best from 2003 through 2012." (10/01) 2001 Philip Togni Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 97 points Robert Parker: "An absolutely spectacular wine (and one of my all-time favorites from this incredibly consistent and reliable producer of long-lived Cabernet Sauvignons), the 2001 is still an infant at age ten. Its inky/blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, blueberries, black olives and white flowers. Dense and full-bodied with a multidimensional personality yet incredibly young and unevolved, this wine tastes no different than it did when I had it eight years ago. A remarkable effort from Philip Togni, it will not hit full maturity for another 5-10 years and should keep for three decades thereafter." (06/11) 93 points Stephen Tanzer: "Good medium ruby. Explosive aromas of briary mountain berries, licorice and dark chocolate, Dense, sweet, layered and rich, with brooding, slightly medicinal flavors that expand impressively toward the back. At once powerful and smooth. Intriguing hints of black olive, mocha and earth. Very long and rich on the back end, with huge, molar-coating tannins. Harmonious from the outset, but a wine well worth cellaring." (05/04)
